Ask Cailin: What are your top tips for new bloggers?

What are some of your top tips for newbie bloggers?

Hi Nati,

Thanks for being the first to use my advice column! I really hope people get into using this. I actually got the idea from Amanda at Advice from a Twenty-Something. Her popular column, Ask Amanda, always inspired me to do something similar.
As for your question, there are so many things a new blogger can do to get things going in the right direction. While the practical stuff like going self-hosted and branding yourself is very important, I think new bloggers also need to focus on getting into the right mindset. Here are a few top tips I would suggest:
Realize that there will be both good days and bad days and that your blog isn’t defined by the bad days.
Practice a spirit of giving and you will receive. This means answering others questions, sharing others’ content, and just being generally helpful and willing to raise others up. I’m a big believer in the idea that when you give to others, you get that same love back in the end.
Stay true to yourself. This means that you might pass on popular posts if they go against your values or even if you just aren’t feeling it. You want your audience to look up to the real you, not a persona you manufacture. I know there are bloggers who create a persona for their blog and maybe that works in the short term, but I imagine it’s pretty hard, in the long run, to keep up appearances.
I hope this was helpful!
Happy stumblin’!

Wonderful tips!! Staying true to yourself is so important! When I first started blogging, I was trying to keep up with a blogger that I admired, but I quickly burned out. Soon after, I settled into my own groove. 🙂

Yes, it’s good to look up to successful bloggers but endlessly trying to keep up can really burn you out. I’m glad you started your own thing! And thanks for reading my tips!
