Why I Started Blogging

I actually started my first blog in college so I would have a place to keep all of my short stories I used to write. I never shared any of my posts and really only used it as a sort of diary/story keeper. However, I eventually deleted the blog. (Don’t worry though, I saved the short stories in a different place!) Not long after, I returned to blogging for a class assignment in which we had to build and maintain a blog for the semester. We could write about anything we wanted, so I chose to write about culture things, like how to survive in college and how to build your etiquette skills, things like that. The blog was called Stumbly.

Stumbly might be familiar for older readers of this blog, because as you might have guessed, Whiskers and Ink was previously Stumbly until I rebranded it about a year ago! If you go back far enough in the archives, you might come across some posts I wrote way back in the Stumbly days.

Stumbly FINALTransparent

This used to be my old logo! I loved it but it just didn’t really match what I wanted to end up blogging about (books!) Also, the misspelled ‘tails’ instead of ‘tales’ always bothered me.

Anyway, after that class ended, I dropped Stumbly and didn’t pick blogging back up seriously until a little more than a year ago. In the interim, I’ve dabbled here and there with other blogs, trying my hand at Buzzfeedy-type blog topics, travel, etc. But I eventually stopped to think about what I really enjoy doing that hasn’t changed over time, and for me, that is reading and talking about books.

So, a year ago, I rebranded Stumbly into Whiskers & Ink, a bookish blog. Whiskers & Ink is split into 3 primary categories: book news and reviews, blogging tips and tricks, and other advice and adventures. While there are definitely weeks that I don’t feel like blogging, I’ve found over the last year that choosing a book blog was the right choice. (Most) weeks I’m excited to read and blog and chat with other readers/bloggers about what they’re up to.

I made my new header myself! Fun fact, for a while, I ran a little header/logo making business for extra cash.

I’m really happy to be every week chatting with bloggers and sharing book news with my readers. Thank YOU for being one of them!

-Happy reading! Cailin

It’s really cool that you made your own header! Out of interest, was the header/logo business very profitable? It’s just I quite like playing around with that sort of thing, but never thought of it as a way of making money 😉

Thanks for reading! It depends on your prices but I made pretty good money when I had regular customers. But it didn’t last, as people don’t change their headers very often and I went though my audience. I only made good money doing it for about less than 2 months, then very sporadic until I stopped.

It is always nice to read about why people started blogging. Sometimes, it takes a few tries before actually sticking. That was my case! Glad you have been enjoying the journey so far!

I love reading “why I started blogging” posts! It’s a better way of understanding the blogger’s goals and how they settled on what they blog.
Love your logos, they’re so cute!

This was fun to read how you started blogging! I love learning WHY people start blogging, what inspired them, and how their blogs evolved. Mine has gone through a few different versions and it’s kind of cool how your blog evolves with you. By the way, can I just say your blog name is the CUTEST and so is your header??? So adorable!!! I can’t believe you made that yourself! You’re really talented!

Aw, thank you so much! I spent way too long thinking up a blog name. It’s really inspired in part by my cat Mooney and how she’s my best reading buddy. 🙂

I love your header! I’m thinking of rebranding my blog at some point but I’m not sure how to go about it just yet. Book blogs are some of my favourites to read! x

Rebranding def takes time. It’s more than just changing a name or a header, you also have to change all your social accounts, email campaigns, etc. But I think it was worth it! Best of luck!
