I already did a ranking post of all the books I read in 2019, but I wanted to do a fun bonus post highlighting my top 5 books for the year, and share the top 5 things I did this year!
My Top 5 Books of 2019
- King of Scars-Leigh Bardugo
- Nevernight-Jay Kristoff
- Ninth House-Leigh Bardugo
- Darkdawn-Jay Kristoff
- Storm and Fury-Jennifer Armentrout*
Of course, Ms. Bardugo absolutely killed it this year, and I have no idea how she manages to write quality books so quickly. Jay Kristoff also had a big year, though I thought Darkdawn was a tad of a let-down. It was still great but the trilogy went slightly down in quality as it went on, in my opinion. And lastly, Jennifer Armentrout appeared on the scene with a fresh voice in fantasy! I read her book as an ARC and I was so happy to get a first peek at the story.
Top 5 Things I Did in 2019
I went on a hot air balloon ride over Tuscany!
I swear if one day I’m on my death bed and somebody asks me what the craziest thing I ever did was, agreeing to a hot air balloon ride will be a strong contender. Our family vacation this year was to Italy and we decided to end our time in Tuscany with a sunrise hot air balloon ride. Our pilot was a pro and it was fun once I relaxed a little, but heights aren’t really my thing and I was pretty freaked for the first half of the ride. I had a severe survivor’s high once we finally touched down.
I went on a trail ride along the beach, estuary and through a small Mexican village near San Jose del Cabo!
I love a good trail ride and I shelled out for a 2-hour ride while I celebrated my birthday in Cabo. In a streak of luck, it was the off-season and so I ended up being the only person on the ride that day. I galloped along the beach for the first time, cantered through the dunes and even splashed through the estuary. For two hours, I felt just like some adventurous character from out of a novel and it was amazing.
I took my Mom to a fancy tea room for her birthday.
There is a really cute and fancy tea room in St. Louis and my sisters and I took our Mom for high tea. While the tea was good, I really enjoyed their petit curry sandwiches and decadent desserts.
I started riding and jumping again.
I took a lot of lessons as a kid but ran out of money and time in college so my equestrian life took a halt. Cut to this spring, when I finally realized I really missed it and needed a hobby again. Over the last 6 months, I got back into it and started jumping again. Unfortunately, I’ve had to put it on hold again for financial reasons, but I’m so glad I took the leap while I could.
I hugged a llama and alpaca in a hotel in Portland!
On a work trip to Portland, I attended a social media conference, and one of the activities included a happy hour with a llama and alpaca photoshoot. I couldn’t turn that down, and it was just a great, odd Portland moment.
